Leave your pocketbook, your wallet, and leave all money, plastic credit and checkbooks back at the hotel. Take only the cash you expect to use on beverages, tipping and few dollars you anticipate to lose and keep the rest behind.
Pessimistic? Not by any means. Realistic more like.
